Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to dementia research, and has been responsible for some groundbreaking research in the fields of research and treatment, as well as providing invaluable advice and support to people living with Alzheimer’s.
What is dementia?
Dementia primarily affects cognitive function and memory, and affects around 850,000 people alive today, and every day around 600 further people develop the disease. is also known to be the leading cause of death in the UK. Right now, there is no cure – and, according to research undertaken by the charity, approximately 1 in 3 babies born in 2021 will develop dementia in their lifetime, making it essential that research is invested in as urgently as possible.
How are Alzheimer’s Research UK tackling dementia?
Alzheimer’s Research UK are striving towards a world without dementia, and focus on four central prongs of tackling the disease: a greater understanding of the diseases that cause dementia, an earlier and more accurate diagnosis for sufferers, and a reduced risk for those who face their diagnosis. As they work across these areas of action, Alzheimer’s Research UK have facilitated the rapid development of treatments to tackle the illness, through fundraising and investing in lifesaving research. Since 1998, the ARUK team has invested in 972 projects spanning every aspect of the disease, from research to prevention and cure.
The Alzheimer’s Research Team has allowed them to fund thousands of dementia researchers based in 75 organisations across the UK, in 31 international institutions. The next few years are essential for the team at Alzheimer’s Research UK. With their goal of introducing an effective and successful treatment for Alzheimer’s by 2025 imminent, the research team is working harder than ever to drive towards this goal.
